John Fullerton MacArthur Jr., a towering figure in evangelical Christianity and long-time senior pastor of Grace Community Church, has passed away at the age of 86. He died peacefully at 6:17 p.m. in Santa Clarita, California, due to complications from pneumonia.
MacArthur, who served his congregation faithfully for over 56 years, was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to biblical truth and expository preaching. His death marks the end of a remarkable era in evangelical ministry.
A Life of Ministry and Conviction
Since 1969, MacArthur led Grace Community Church with clarity, conviction, and a deep love for Scripture. His verse-by-verse teaching method made the Bible accessible to millions and set a standard for expository preaching globally.
He also founded Grace to You, a media ministry that broadcast his sermons in more than 40 languages and on thousands of outlets daily. His MacArthur Study Bible, now a cornerstone in many Christian homes and seminaries, sold millions of copies and influenced pastors, students, and laypeople worldwide.
Challenges and Legacy
Despite recent health setbacksāincluding surgeries and extended hospitalizationsāMacArthur remained resolute in his faith and ministry until his final days. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, he drew national attention for his bold legal defense of in-person worship, taking a principled stand that resonated across the church world.
As chancellor of The Masterās University and Seminary, he trained countless leaders in theology, biblical interpretation, and pastoral care.
