Ghanaian theologian, intellectual and missionary Carl Sean Desmonds has released a provocative new book, The Coming Apologetic Revolution in Africa: Defending the Faith, Reforming the Church, and Awakening a Continent, challenging African Christians to combine spiritual passion with biblical knowledge, critical thinking and a reasoned defence of their faith.
Desmonds argues that despite Christianity’s remarkable growth across Africa, the Church faces serious challenges, including biblical illiteracy, false teaching, theological shallowness and the suppression of difficult questions.
“Emotion must be married to examination; fervour must be wedded to thought; experience must be tested against Scripture,” Desmonds writes.
The book calls for a new generation of African believers capable of responding intelligently and biblically to atheism, Islam, African traditional religion and theological errors emerging from within Christianity itself. Desmonds defines apologetics as providing reasoned responses to challenges against Christianity while positively presenting the case for Christ.
Significantly, he argues that Africa is not importing an intellectual Christian tradition but recovering its own heritage, pointing to African Christian thinkers such as Tertullian and Athanasius and later theologians including Byang Kato and Kwame Bediako.
The book ultimately presents apologetics as more than an academic exercise; it is envisioned as a movement capable of reforming churches and shaping African society through believers who think carefully, examine evidence and apply biblical truth beyond the pulpit.
Desmonds closes with a stirring charge: “Arise, Africa. Defend your faith. Love your church. Transform your world.”
