Introduction

Pastor Mensa Otabil, Founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and Senior Pastor of ICGC Christ Temple East, has challenged Christians—particularly young people—to reject the pursuit of easy success and develop a vision capable of seeing possibilities beyond present difficulties.

Preaching on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie-Accra, Pastor Otabil delivered a message titled “How Far Do You See?”, drawing lessons from the contrasting choices of Lot and Abraham in Genesis 13.

“The way we see things affects our choices and our actions,” he declared, stressing that vision determines both present decisions and future outcomes.

Lot Saw What Looked Good Now

Pastor Otabil explained that when Abraham allowed Lot to choose where he wanted to settle, Lot selected the well-watered plain of Jordan because it appeared prosperous and attractive.

Yet Lot’s vision was limited to what looked good immediately. He saw one flourishing location but failed to discern its future destruction.

“What he saw as beautiful didn’t have a future,” Pastor Otabil said.

He warned believers against making major life decisions solely on present comfort, appearance, convenience or instant gratification. Lot’s choice seemed advantageous, but it ultimately left him vulnerable.

Abraham Saw Beyond the Mountain

In contrast, God commanded Abraham to “lift up your eyes now” and look northward, southward, eastward and westward.

Pastor Otabil highlighted the significance of looking “from” where Abraham stood rather than simply looking at his present circumstances.

“Sometimes in order to catch a glimpse of the future, you have to look away from the present. In order to see the big picture, you have to look away from the small picture.”

Unlike Lot, Abraham was not shown a comfortable, well-watered location. His vision included mountains, deserts, seas and ruins—pictures of obstacles, barrenness, chaos and brokenness.

Yet these difficult places represented opportunities for transformation.

Stop Looking for the Watered Garden

Addressing young people directly, Pastor Otabil warned against expecting to inherit success without confronting difficult problems.

“God is not taking you to what has been. He’s taking you to what will be,” he said. “You don’t have to fixate on what is. You have to fixate on what can be.”

He challenged young adults to become builders and problem-solvers rather than people searching only for already-made opportunities.

“Sometimes your greatest success will be given to you in a desert.”

Using Ghana as an example, he added: “That’s why Ghana has problems. So you can solve them. You don’t run away from it. You stay and solve it.”

Your Next 30 Years Can Change Everything

Pastor Otabil particularly encouraged people aged 40 and below not to conclude that they were late in life. Pointing to the dramatic technological changes of the past 30 years, he urged them to imagine what could be accomplished over the next three or four decades.

“Stop looking to the grass that is green, the watered garden. Start looking to the mountain and look into the desert and look into the sea and look into the ruins. Because God is giving you problems you can solve.”

He concluded by praying that the younger generation would not be intimidated by mountains, deserts, ruins or chaotic seas, but would see beyond them to God’s promises and transform their world.

Conclusion

The central question of Pastor Otabil’s sermon remains deeply personal: How far do you see?

Lot saw immediate comfort; Abraham saw generational possibilities. The Christian life, Pastor Otabil taught, requires vision that looks beyond present limitations and recognises opportunities hidden inside difficult situations.

His final charge was unmistakable: “May you take the mountains. May you take the desert. May you take the chaos of the sea. May you possess the ruins. And may you transform your world because you are the seed of Abraham.”
