Introduction: When Everything Else Can Fail

Life teaches us to build security around what we can see and control. We pursue education, develop skills, work hard, build relationships and accumulate resources. These things are valuable, but none of them was designed to take the place of God. Money can disappear. Jobs can be lost. Influential people can disappoint us. Health can change unexpectedly. Even carefully constructed plans can collapse. Scripture therefore points believers towards a deeper foundation: trust in God.

First Chronicles 5:18–22 records the remarkable experience of the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh. They went into battle with 44,760 trained warriors. They had weapons, numbers, unity and military skill. Yet their decisive advantage was not their human capacity. “They cried out to God in the battle. He heeded their prayer, because they put their trust in Him” (1 Chronicles 5:20). Their story reveals an important truth: use what God has given you, but never allow what you have to replace the God who gave it.

Your Strength Is Not Your Source

Education matters. Hard work matters. Skills matter. Relationships matter. Financial resources matter. But there is a difference between possessing these things and trusting in them. The danger begins when our confidence shifts from God to our abilities.

David understood this when he confronted Goliath. Humanly speaking, Goliath possessed the superior equipment, experience and physical strength. David nevertheless declared, “I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts” (1 Samuel 17:45). David used a sling and stone, but his trust was not in the sling.

That distinction remains important for Christians today. Prepare for the interview. Develop your professional skills. Build the business. Study diligently. Save and invest wisely. Work with excellence. But remember where your ultimate confidence belongs. “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).

Trust Becomes Visible Through Prayer

Trusting God is more than saying, “God will take care of me.” Biblical trust moves believers towards prayer. The warriors in 1 Chronicles cried to God during the battle. They did not abandon their weapons or refuse to fight; they recognised that their weapons alone could not guarantee victory. This is where prayer becomes crucial.

When Hannah faced years of childlessness and provocation, she poured out her soul before God (1 Samuel 1:10–18). When King Asa confronted an overwhelmingly powerful army, he prayed, “Help us, O LORD our God, for we rest on You” (2 Chronicles 14:11). Prayer acknowledges that there are limits to human strength but no limits to God’s ability. Hebrews 4:16 consequently invites believers to “come boldly to the throne of grace” to obtain mercy and find grace in times of need.

When the Battle Becomes God’s Battle

One of the most striking statements in 1 Chronicles 5 is that “the war was God’s” (verse 22). The people fought, but God gave the victory. That balance is essential. Trusting God does not mean becoming passive, irresponsible or unprepared. It means doing what is within your responsibility while refusing to behave as though everything depends entirely upon you.

There will be situations where qualifications cannot provide the answer, money cannot solve the problem and connections cannot open the door. At such moments, faith remembers that God is still present. As Scripture declares, “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).

Conclusion: Put Your Confidence Back in God

Perhaps you have trusted your intelligence, finances, career, connections or personal strength for too long. These may be gifts from God, but they make poor substitutes for Him. The Christian response is not to abandon excellence, preparation or hard work. It is to put them in their proper place. Pray. Prepare. Work. Persevere. But trust God.

When circumstances become bigger than your strength, cry out to Him. When human help fails, keep your confidence in Him. When you cannot understand what God is doing, continue walking with Him. Your resources may be limited. Your opposition may be great. The situation may appear impossible. But the battle is not greater than the God in whom you trust.
