Wealth and Magnificent Church Buildings Are Not Proof of God’s Presence
Pastor Mensa Otabil has challenged Christians to stop measuring divine approval through material wealth, impressive church buildings and visible accomplishments.
Delivering his sermon at ICGC Christ Temple East on Sunday, October 18, 2026, the ICGC founder warned that outward prosperity cannot reliably establish whether a person or ministry genuinely represents God.
“Don’t use material things to show who God has approved or whom God has disapproved,” he declared.
Pastor Otabil questioned the assumption that constructing magnificent religious facilities automatically demonstrates God’s endorsement.
“Think because we built a nice building means God is with us,” he challenged his congregation.
He explained that some faithful servants of God may lack impressive material possessions, while others with substantial wealth may fail to demonstrate genuine godliness.
“There are pastors with one shoe who are righteous and there are those who are wearing golden shoes who are wrong,” he stated.
Drawing from Jesus’ parable of the wheat and tares, Pastor Otabil emphasised that spiritual authenticity must be established through character rather than physical achievements.
He encouraged believers to develop biblical discernment and avoid confusing financial success, impressive infrastructure or outward prosperity with genuine spiritual authority.
