Introduction: The Forgotten Evidence of True Discipleship
One of the greatest challenges facing Christianity today is not necessarily the absence of prayer, spiritual gifts or powerful preaching, but the failure of many believers to demonstrate the love of Christ in their daily relationships. We celebrate miracles, breakthroughs and prophetic declarations, yet sometimes neglect the very commandment Jesus Christ gave His disciples shortly before His crucifixion.
In John 13:34–35, Jesus declared, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you” (KJV). He further explained that the world would recognise His disciples by their love for one another. This means that our greatest witness is not merely what we preach but how we treat people.
1. Love Is a Commandment, Not a Suggestion
Jesus did not encourage His disciples to love whenever it was convenient; He commanded them to love because love reflects God’s character. Leviticus 19:18 establishes the responsibility to love our neighbours, while Romans 13:8 teaches that whoever loves another has fulfilled the law.
Unfortunately, some Christians demonstrate affection towards members of their departments or denominations while treating other believers with indifference. Biblical love must transcend church departments, social status, ethnicity and personal preferences because everyone who belongs to Christ belongs to His family.
2. Jesus Christ Is Our Standard of Love
The uniqueness of Christ’s commandment lies in the standard He established: “As I have loved you.” Romans 5:8 reveals that God demonstrated His love towards us while we were still sinners, reminding believers that genuine love is sacrificial rather than transactional.
Consider the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37, who demonstrated compassion towards a wounded stranger when others passed by. Similarly, Christians must willingly support struggling believers, forgive offenders and show kindness even when there is no possibility of receiving anything in return.

3. Spiritual Power Without Love Is Worthless
The Apostle Paul confronted the spiritually gifted Corinthian church with an uncomfortable truth: extraordinary spiritual manifestations cannot substitute for Christian character. According to 1 Corinthians 13:1–3, speaking in tongues, exercising mountain-moving faith and giving generously amount to nothing without love.
We can preach without love, pray without love and even serve faithfully in church without genuinely caring for people. Paul therefore reminds us that love must govern every expression of spiritual maturity.
4. Love Must Become Visible in Everyday Life
The early church demonstrated practical love through generosity and mutual care, ensuring that needy believers received assistance (Acts 4:32–35). Their example challenges today’s Christians to move beyond religious activities into practical expressions of compassion.
Whether through financial assistance, encouragement, forgiveness or visiting the vulnerable, believers must demonstrate the gospel they proclaim. As the Apostle John teaches in 1 John 3:18, we must love through actions and truth rather than words alone.
Conclusion: Let the World See Christ Through Us
Beloved, the ultimate evidence of Christian discipleship is a life transformed by God’s love. Through the Holy Spirit, whose fruit includes love (Galatians 5:22), we can overcome selfishness, bitterness and division.
Let us examine our hearts, forgive those who offend us and deliberately demonstrate Christlike love because the world must not only hear about Jesus Christ from our lips; it must encounter His love through our lives.
