Ghanaian theologian and founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, has challenged Christians to reconsider their understanding of God’s presence in church buildings.

Speaking during a church building dedication service at ICGC Prayer Temple in Accra, the respected Bible teacher explained that physical structures, regardless of their magnificence, cannot contain the Almighty God.

Drawing from Solomon’s prayer in 1 Kings 8:27, he emphasised that even heaven cannot contain God.

“Solomon understood something, that buildings cannot contain God. That when we build, we are not building to contain God,” he declared.

According to Pastor Otabil, churches should be respected as places dedicated to worship, prayer and biblical teaching, but believers must never confuse physical structures with God’s actual dwelling place.

“God is not in this building. When we vacate here and go home, it’s a building,” he stated.

He explained that the presence of God comes through believers who gather for worship rather than through the building itself.

“The building doesn’t carry the presence we carry,” he emphasised.

His message challenges Christians worldwide to recognise that genuine spiritual identity comes from their relationship with Christ, not from the physical locations where they worship.
