Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has cautioned Christian leaders against disloyalty, unhealthy competition and the pursuit of ministry success at the expense of integrity, declaring that how a minister becomes successful matters before God.
Speaking at a Church Growth Conference, the Archbishop described disloyalty as one of the major challenges he has encountered during decades of ministry. Recounting experiences of betrayal and opposition, he warned leaders against undermining those who helped build and mentor them.
“When it comes to disloyalty, it’s a curse,” he declared, describing disloyalty as a destructive spiritual force.
Church Growth Must Be About Souls
Duncan-Williams stressed that genuine church growth should not be driven by competition, money, numbers or the desire to prove superiority.
“Build church growth with the motive of soul winning,” he told the gathering. “We aren’t proving a point to anybody. We are rescuing the perishing. We are redeeming the lost.”
He explained that systems, organisation and order are necessary for growing churches, but insisted that church growth goes beyond systems.
The Archbishop also challenged ministers to examine the motives behind their ambitions, warning against lying, slandering, cheating or undermining others to gain prominence.
“God will not judge your success. He will judge the how,” he said, adding that God examines the motives that produce people’s actions.
True Success Is How You Finish
Duncan-Williams further argued that Christian success cannot ultimately be measured by the size of a ministry or present achievements.
“True success is how you finish,” he said, pointing to Jesus’ declaration, “It is finished,” and Paul’s testimony that he had finished his course and kept the faith.
His closing charge was unmistakable: ministry must remain anchored in loyalty, soul winning, right motives and faithfulness to God’s assignment.
“Be careful how you become successful,” he warned.
