Introduction
On the opening night of Greater Works Conference 2026, Monday, 3 August, Pastor Mensa Otabil, Founder and General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), delivered a stirring message titled “The Stone That Crushed the Image.”
Drawing extensively from Daniel 2 and connecting it with Revelation 11 and the coming of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, Pastor Otabil presented a sweeping biblical picture of kingdoms rising and falling while God steadily fulfils His purposes. His central message was unmistakable: human systems may appear powerful and permanent, but God’s Kingdom will ultimately prevail.
The Dream That No One Could Interpret
Pastor Otabil began with Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream. The Babylonian king demanded that his wise men not only interpret his dream but first tell him what he had dreamt.
When they could not, Daniel turned to God. God revealed both the dream and its interpretation to him, demonstrating that He remains sovereign over rulers, nations and history.
As Pastor Otabil explained Daniel’s confidence:
“We serve a God who is the ancient of days. He knows the end from the beginning.”
The dream featured a magnificent image composed of gold, silver, bronze, iron, and iron mixed with clay—representing successive earthly kingdoms.
The Stone That Changes Everything
Then came the dramatic turning point. Daniel saw a stone “cut without hands” strike the image, crush it and eventually become a great mountain filling the earth.
Pastor Otabil emphasised the supernatural character of the stone. Though physical, it was not produced by human hands. He connected this stone ultimately to Jesus Christ and God’s Kingdom.
The kingdoms represented by the image appeared impressive, but none could withstand what God had set in motion.
“The systems of this world, the kingdoms of this world are about to go down.”
The sermon traced Daniel’s prophecy through Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome, showing how Pastor Otabil understood the arrival of Christ during the Roman era as the fulfilment of Daniel’s prophetic timetable. Jesus arrived without an earthly army and announced: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has arrived.”
God Is Still Lord Over History
One of the sermon’s strongest themes was that God does not merely observe history—He works through it.
Pastor Otabil reminded believers that Daniel’s prophecy appeared to wait centuries for fulfilment, yet what God had spoken eventually happened at the appointed time.
He therefore challenged Christians not to interpret their lives merely through present circumstances:
“The events of your life are not accidents. The events of your life are not just happening.”
Even ordinary dates and moments can carry divine purpose. “To you it’s calendar, to God it’s assignment,” he declared.
This means a believer’s birthplace, family background, nationality or circumstances cannot ultimately cancel God’s purpose.
“The place you were born cannot stop destiny. The people who gave birth to you cannot stop destiny. The nation you were born into cannot stop destiny.”
Stop Trying to Crush the Image Yourself
Pastor Otabil’s practical challenge was to trust God when confronting seemingly immovable situations.
Daniel did not crush Nebuchadnezzar’s image. Nebuchadnezzar did not crush it either. The stone came “without hands”.
“It may seem like this is too much for me, God says, I will crush it.”
Pastor Otabil encouraged worshippers to bring before God the “images” that had resisted change for years and believe that what human strength could not accomplish could still yield to divine intervention.
His message culminated in prayer and Communion, with worshippers invited to present their struggles to God and affirm their faith in His power.
Conclusion: God’s Kingdom Has the Final Word
“The Stone That Crushed the Image” was ultimately a sermon about confidence in the sovereignty of God.
Kingdoms rise. Systems appear invincible. Circumstances can remain unchanged for years. Yet none of them is greater than the God who governs history.
Pastor Otabil’s challenge to believers was therefore not to surrender to what looks permanent. Jesus Christ—the Stone—has established a Kingdom that will never be destroyed.
For anyone confronting an intimidating situation, the message offers a powerful reminder: what looks unmovable does not have the final word. God does.
As Pastor Otabil declared:
“The Lord is your victory. The Lord is your freedom.”
